Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama opens Equitable Table Economic Growth Campaign in Cities Programme in Agona Swedru

The Minister, Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama (MP) launched the Joint Work Programme (JWP) Equitable Economic Growth Campaign in Cities in Agona Swedru on Tuesday 22nd August, 2017. The programme is a 24-month study under the auspices of Cities Alliance an International Development Agency based in Brussels and the Urban Development Unit of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in two selected secondary cities; Agona Swedru and Cape Coast.
The Joint Work Programme on Equitable Economic Growth (EEG) in Cities Campaign is an initiative of the Cities Alliance in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. It aims to support greater access to public goods and services in cities, in order to reduce inequalities and foster inclusive economic growth. The Hon. Minister indicated that the programme and its expected outcomes will help Government effectively implement its One District, One Factory initiative.
The Workshop was facilitated by Dr. Ohene Sarfoh, Country Representative of the Cities Alliance and Ms. Alexandra-Marie Kurth, the Task Team Leader (TTL). The team was supported by Prof. Brian Roberts, a Local Economic Development (LED) expert from Australia and Mr. Fred Bruhn, Programme Officer with Cities Alliance.
The major outcome of the workshops, held in Agona Swedru and Cape Coast identified the following as priority services that the Local Authority (Assemblies) have to improve to ensure improvement in the local economy:
- Agona Swedru (Agro-processing & Storage and Small Scale Enterprise improvement)
- Cape Coast (Sanitation & Waste Management and Tourism)
As next steps, the study will delve deeper into the identified areas and come out with reports and recommendations towards improvement of the local economies of these secondary cities.
Hon. Kwasi Boateng Adjei (MP), Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development launched the programme in Cape Coast on Thursday 24th August, 2017. He was accompanied by Mr. Sylvanus Adzornu, Head, Urban Development at the Ministry.
