President to Sanction MMDCEs Who Flout Sanitation Rules – Minister Announces

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced that the President will take firm action against Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who fail to uphold sanitation standards in their jurisdictions.

 According to him, strict compliance with sanitation rules forms part of the key performance indicators (KPIs) for all MMDCEs nationwide. He made the announcement during a strategic meeting with MMDCEs and their Coordinating Directors in the Greater Accra Region ahead of the December National Sanitation Week activities scheduled for 13th–20th December 2025.

Hon. Ibrahim stressed that sanitation remains a critical national priority, especially as Ghana prepares to welcome thousands of visitors returning home for the festive season. He revealed that the President has directed that every MMDCE must demonstrate visible leadership in cleaning and maintaining their localities, and those who fall short will face consequences.

‘The President has made it clear that sanitation is a non-negotiable responsibility and any MMDCE who fails to deliver on sanitation targets will be sanctioned,’ the Minister stated, adding that sanitation was no longer just a routine activity rather it forms part of their performance contract evaluation as leaders.”

He added that the Ministry will closely monitor progress throughout the sanitation week, especially in high-impact areas such as markets, lorry stations, principal streets, commercial zones, and communities, noting that Assemblies are expected to provide regular situational updates to track achievements and identify gaps that require support.

The Minister also charged the Assemblies to intensify community mobilization, ensure strict supervision, and coordinate effectively with traditional authorities, transport unions, youth groups, and religious bodies, emphasizing that Greater Accra, as the national capital region, must lead by example.

He further urged MMDCEs to personally participate in cleanup activities, indicating  that as leaders, their visibility and commitment will influence how communities respond, to the cleanup exercise and called for a collaborative efforts to protect the dignity of the towns and cities in the country.
